I noticed tonight after I feed my horses that I had an ant bite on my hand. When I looked around I noticed several trails of ants leading into and out of my feed thats kept in a steel, galvanized trash can. Problem is that my horses had already started eating at this point, and since I'm not the one who fed the last several days, they may have been eating the feed with ants in it for several meals! Is this really harmful to them? They're not fire ants, small brown ones. I also have over a full bag of feed still in the trash can, do I need to throw it all out? Finally how can I prevent them from coming back? I've lived here for 3 years and this is the first time that this has ever happened! Thanks in advance for any help!

Ants are high in protein and are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. Some gourmet shops even sell chocolate candy with ants in it to give crunch! I doubt they'll hurt your horses.

Rhonda, I spray insect repellent around the bottom of the can. Seems to work. Shirl
