Dr.O. with all the rain we had this year the square bales I got earlier are questionable at most. We have finally dried up here and crab grass (we call it water grass) is flourishing. A farmer guy called today and asked if I would like to buy some nice, DRY (not rained on) round bales. When I looked at the hay I could see there was quite a bit of crab grass along with it's seeds mixed in with the grass.

My pastures are full of this stuff too, especially one of the horse pastures, I have been wondering if this stuff may be bad for horses Very prone to founder.. in the pasture it doesn't seem to be their favorite choice of grass to eat.

The over abundance of the seeds heads concerned me in the hay, they are not awns, but wondered if the NSC's in them would be high. Obviously this is more mature stuff since it has gone to seed, but do the seeds contain a high nsc? I would like to get this hay, but would like to make sure I'm not feeding the IR boys candy

Being an unimproved grass, crab grass should be relatively low in NSC's but I don't know what it's fructan status may be.
