Do you recommend any vaccinations for a 5 month old foal getting ready to transport in 3 weeks. I was thinking about influenza and rhino, but from what I understand you usually wait until they are older. What do you recommend? The mare received her 5, 7, and 9 month rhino shots, EWT + West Nile, and Rabies vaccinations about a month prior to giving birth (but did not receive the influenza). The buyer is having a shipper pick her up, so I imagine that she will be exposed to other horses. Thanks.

Karen, I see no reason not to follow the recommendations in the article. We have moved vaccinations in the well cared for foal till the six month due to maternal immunity inactivating the vaccine making earlier vaccination ineffective. It is unfortunate the foal travels as maternal immunity is wearing thin and before routine vaccination but even if indicated 3 weeks is not enough time for primary vaccination and booster.
