Ever since I had my horses last set of shoes put on he has had a problem with his front hooves crossing over each other. He keeps clipping his left with his right hoof and creating a sore on the pastern. When I watch him trot you can see the front hooves crossing over each other as compared to the back. I called the farrier and he says the angle is correct and everything is correct. I have called a new farrier to come out. What does he need to do to correct the problem.

Pull the shoes and balance the feet. I had this happen with a farrier once and he tried to blame it on the horse and told me to just ride him. It was, of course, a horrible trim job and the horse was very unlevel. To ride him could very well have caused injury.

Hello Debby, What has to be done depends on your horse's conformation. If he has conformational issues that cause this inside winging he may need trimming that will force the flight is a straighter line. If he has been trimmed out of balance, correcting the imbalance will fix the problem. Is this the farrier that always has done his feet and what is your assessment of the horses conformation and hoof balance? DrO

Thank you for your response Dr. O. I got the horse in April and he had no shoes and no problems. I used a different farrier due to relocation and had shoes put on the front due to wearing of the hoof fronts and all was fine. I then has shoes added to the back because of wearing too by the same farrier and all was fine. I took him in for his annual exam and the vet mentioned the angle was sightly off on his front right foot and to mention it to my farrier. One side of the hoof was longer. I mentioned it to the farrier when the last set of shoes was put on. The issue started at the same time as his last set of shoes were put on. Maybe he corrected to much? I have scheduled a different farrier for this week. What do I tell him? Thank you for your help!!

Instead of bringing in someone with no history on the problem, I think I would have back the same farrier and discuss what has happened and what changes he made last time that may have resulted in the interference. After all he seemed to be following you and your Vet's recommendations when the problem occurred. After the discussion then consider what the next best move is. DrO
