Discussion on Concern following Castration of 2 Colts | |

Posted on Thursday, Sep 30, 2010 - 2:07 pm: I had two colts castrated (aged 15 months) a couple of days ago, both by standing castration performed in the stable at home, by a reputable vet. I was told to leave the colts in for a fews hours then turn out for 24 hour pasture exercise. Each colt was given tetanus, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic jabs and are now on a 5 day course of antibiotics. By the time I turned them out, there was virtually no bleeding, just the occasional drip and both incision sites looked clean. When I turned them out, they went mad! Galloped around, rearing etc. I couldn't believe it. I separated them straight away(but in neighbouring paddocks) and they calmed down. When I looked at the incision, both colts had something protruding down by about and inch, red/pink in colour, smooth and rounded. Not like a blood clot. I panicked and called my vet and sent him a photo. One colt soon retracted the protusion back in, the other also retracted it but it was still just visible next morning. My vet was not too concerned and said that some tissue left in the scrotum could have come through. Both colts seem fine now although one has sizeable swelling and I can still see something right up by the incision site. I have attached the photo (when the protusion was at its maximum) for you to look at as I am still slightly concerned in case it was bowel. Sorry it is so graphic! Can anyone give me any insight? Many thanks Cathy Williams |

Could be the stump of the vas defers and its associated structures, vaginal tunic, or everted swollen subq tissues. It will take an exam to correctly identify it and if indeed it is some peri-testicular tissue I think if it persists it should be trimmed back to speed healing. DrO |
