This probably sounds like a lame question but is there a time limit on how long a horse should lay down? I have a mare who was injured 2 years ago. If she isn't eating she is laying. Yes, she still has some issues but no leg or hoof problems. Years ago I had read that a horse shouldn't lay down for more than 30 minutes at a time. I tried locating an article but couldn't find one. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Jolie, my horse will lay down for hours at a time, always has, especially on a nice day. He does it in his stall when he's in on a cold night too, but that's normal for him. If one of my other three did that it would be abnormal and I may be concerned. So if she has always done that I don't know if I would be terribly concerned. Especially if she is otherwise healthy.

I have the opposite - a horse that wont lie down as she has had a bad past - so afraid I can't help you - but didnt want to not answer!

My other one is too hyperactive and permenantly excited to need naps!

All of my horses, including our two stallions, take naps mid morning and often mid afternoon and they lie down for at least part of the night. We are currently at a show and had to wake up our stallion Mikey for his class. He was flat out snoring away. Non too happy tone bothered, either! I think most horses, if they feel comfortable and secure, will lie down to sleep at times.

However, a horse with pain, especially in the feet, will often spend a lot of time lying down. I think you need to know what is normal for your horse.

Whenever I had the camera on for foaling out I found most of the horses after last snack at about 11 PM would get down even flat and snoring until about 5 AM! On the other hand when they were turned out 24/7 they would take naps up till a few hours.
I even knew a SB that went asleep in the van on his way to the races!
I guess it depends on the horse, I would worry if she changed her habits.
