My horse developed 2 bumps on his back in April. One was very small but the other about the size of a quarter. The vet took a look and said they were dirt bumps and to wash his back with betadine. One of them started to get a lot bigger so I had the saddle guy out who said that he thought that the horse had lost weight over the winter and that caused the saddle to move and rub over the dirt bump, but we should wait for him to gain his weight back since the saddle fit looked pretty close. Now the bump is about 1.5 inches in diameter and to best describe it, it looks like a corn like you would get on your toe. I had the vet out again who perscribed a steriod creme and has me wash his back with betadine and let it sit for 20 minutes then rinse, dry him off and apply the steriod. She also suggested I don't ride him till the bumps go down but since I have a show next week she suggested I take a pad and cut holes for the bumps and then put another saddle pad on.. sort of like a corn pad, to take the pressure off.. after that I'll just be long-lineing and lunging. She also said that we could inject it with Steriods to make it shrink. Dr. O, what's your opinion of injecting these kinds of bumps with steriods.. any other suggestions?

If they think irritation from the saddle caused the bumps, corticosteroids should help.
