My 7 year old mare developed hives within 12 hours after her recent EWT and rabies shots. I had pretreated her with bute because historically she would suffer fevers after vaccines. I am not worried about the hives per se, but would like to know if there is any data out there about what percentage of horses with hives after vaccines suffer anaphylaxis with subsequent vaccines? We plan to pretreat her with hyDrOxyzine before her next shots, which I think will be PHF and West Nile later this month. But the horse is extremely important to me and I would be willing to obtain titers rather than risk a severe systemic reaction, depending on the degree of risk.

Hello Connie,
I have never seen such a report and not ever having an anaphylactoid reaction in the many years I have been giving vaccines to horses don't have a personal feeling. I think the pretreatment with hyDrOxyzine should prevent this however.
