I have a pond that my two Friesians take a daily dip in. I do experience abscesses and currently I'm dealing with one that is growing out with a chunk of the wall that is missing.

I'm sure the right answer is to withhold this activity from them, but they get so much enjoyment from it.

How bad do you think this is for their feet?

Here is the chip in the hoof wall that I'm dealing with. It is a result of an abscess that blew at the coronet band and is growing out. Myntje Hoof Chip #1

I'm inclined to do nothing with this. She has support at the toe and the heel, and this side area is where they usually have flex in the hoof. I took nippers clipped away the loose stuff, and took a rasp and tried to round the edges of the tear.

Also, I'm a weekend rider, and I ride with EZ boots anyway. We just walk on the trail. She will get more wear and tear out on our 3 acres that has a lot of decomposed granite.

The hoof wall that you do see is worn down naturally on our property.

I just take a rasp and touch up her inside toe and outside heel because she is pigeon toed.

Hello Laurie,
I don't think the daily pond dip is likely to be damaging to your horses feet.

OK They will be glad to hear this. I just hate to take this away from them, especially when they are black and get hot during the summer. See below.Myntje Swimming

Laurie, that looks like fun! I have a Freisian mix, and he looks like a butterball...it appears yours keep weight on easily too? I think you said that in your other discussion?

Regarding the hoof, I think a mix of dry and wet is o.k., it's the extremes that seem to be hard on the hoofs. I would be concerned about that one part catching as it's like a sharp corner. Looks like it's been filed down to prevent that.

Yes - I have a complete balloon and a bag of bones. And they are fed far enough apart, that one horse is not intimidating the other.

She is also VERY stocky and broad. Her shoulders stick out almost even with her withers. So sometimes I can't tell how fat she really is vs. how much she is just built like a tank.

I tried to file down the edge on the hoof, but not too much to weaken it more.
