I currently am boarding my horse at a facility that has 60-70 horses. I have always rotated wormers and dewormed my horse every 2 months, never have done a fecal exam. Currently my horses stall is cleaned daily, he has turnout for 3-4 hours a day, the pasture he goes into has other horses who go in after him. They seem to clean the pastures every couple weeks throughout the year. After reading your Deworming Overview Article and related articles I still have questions. I am concerned that I might be doing overkill with deworming every two months. I am running a fecal exam on him today...based on the results, if it is negative, i should not worm him correct? Just run the fecal every 3 months? If it is positive, then I must deworm against what is found and do another fecal a couple weeks later? Should he be on a daily wormer since he is at a boarding facility with so many horses, even if his fecal is negative? I am also trying to NOT be one of those over anal horse owners and leave well enough alone..his weight seems great, he coat is superb, he is happy. Not sure if it worth changing things around. Thanks!!

Hello Okie, The answer to your questions will depend on other factors than those you provide above. Can you tell us a bit more about the herd situation that your horse is exposed to and what is known about the parasite burden of that herd. DrO
