Please advise on dangers of allowing free access to rice straw round bales. My assumption is very low nutritional value vs. high risk of colic.

Gonna repost here, hoping to get a response since I can't find anything specific about rice straw bales. We share our place with someone else, and during the winter we split hay. This year she bought rice straw bales, thinking it would be safe. I won't let ours have access to it, and I am trying to convince her that she shouldn't either. Fine for the cows, not for the horses!

Hello Michelle, Not only do I not have any experience with rice straw I cannot find much of what I would consider a authoritative source on this. I too would assume this is little more than something for a horse to chew on and not a source of nutrition. DrO

In Sacramento, CA area, where they grow a lot of rice, I've heard of rice straw used as bedding; I've never heard of it used for feed.

That was what I figured. Everyone is so desperate that people are baling anything that will sit still and charging HUGE prices. Someone took advantage of her, and now she will have to find suitable hay with much less money to spend.

Good link Sarah, sorry to hear about your friend Michelle. Perhaps she can use it as bedding? DrO
