Dr. O - please check my math. For our aged idle quarter horses who have a body index of 6+, I am replacing morning hay with beet pulp, pre-soaked weight of 3 lbs. I am adding 1/2 pound rice bran to balance. (Wheat bran is not available). Evening feeding consists of mature cutting, but high quality, alfalfa and 14% pelleted feed. Free choice minerals and salt. Three pounds of dry beet pulp doesn't look like much, but when soaked, man!! It's alot! I have always fed beet pulp as a cool source of weight for my young halter horse and old mare with missing teeth, but never as source of forage. As everyone knows by now, there is almost no forage to be bought in Texas. Have to make this stretch, but my budget is getting tighter and tighter and tighter..... Beet pulp is actually going to be more expensive than hay, but it is not in short supply (yet)

Hello Michelle, I don't see any calculations above to check. As a principle forget volume it is weight for weight you need to replace when talking about forage substitution with roughly nutritionally equivalent feed stuffs if you want to maintain the horses current condition. DrO
