Posted on Tuesday, Jan 31, 2012 - 2:53 pm: Last week our 3 yo show gelding had a "moment" with the vet during vaccinations. He apparently flipped over and in the process broke his bottom outside incisor at the gum and cracked the one next to it. The vet x-rayed his jaw and found no fractures.A week out from the incident his bottom remaining incisors are overlapping and crooked. He is DrOpping feed as well. The vet said at the time not to worry because they are baby teeth that will be replaced in 18 months. I am concerned that the shift in his dentition will be permanent. Any suggestions or recommendations? |

He turned out fine.I also have a gelding that's 5 now who is missing his right front tooth, root and all (he came that way) and had to have several baby teeth removed from the gums over his adult teeth - his mouth was kind of a mess & his teeth were all grown over for a pretty bad parrot mouth. Dentist came out and his teeth are now perfectly aligned even with the missing tooth. My 2 year old is now 3 and he's just fine. I'll look for pix of my big gelding if you'd like, I have a couple of him smiling |

It is possible to hypothesize damage to the adult tooth's tissue of origin but if it is so I don't think there is much that can be done at this time. DrO |

So they would most likely be weaker teeth at this point. The adult teeth should be pretty well developed at the crown and fairly durable - and still protected within the jawbone. As a dental hygienist for 37 years, I was the first one to deal with emergencies and get them x-rayed and ready for the Dr. I'll tell you...kids have WAY more stupid mouth accidents than young horses - and they all came out well. We even reinserted popped out adult teeth - when the owners were lucky enough to find them. The mouth has marvelous healing abilities - I'd be surprised if you had any problems. |

Click on "Ageing Horses by their Teeth". It will give you an idea of what a three year old's mouth COULD look like. But remember, your baby's mouth could have very acceptable deviations from the picture. Teeth can come in earlier and later that what "normal" is...and at different angles. |
