Levi was trimmed on Thursday and Sat. he came up lame on his front legs, He does have an increased pulse, and warm feet. He has been on grass all year, but I had limited him to an hour all last week, after he was lame, he has not been on grass at all. He is not doing the founder stance, I have given him 1 gm bute and padded and booted him. With boots on he is walking fine, and acting ok, just short stepping when the boots are off. I am not sure if she trimmed him short. she had to dig out a lot of crumbly stuff in his sole and white line (oh yeah, Levi's wld could be back) We have had tons of mosquitoes and warm weather here, so I had scheduled their spring shots for tomorrow. I also wormed them on Thursday with Panacur. should I still give him his spring shots, or could that complicate things?

I would worry that he has laminitis. I had a mare that foundered exactly in this way. She had gotten into some hay, but seemed o.k. Then had the shoer out, and the trim pushed her over the edge. I had her x-rayed, and she had slight rotation in her coffin bone. She recovered with barefoot trims and careful feeding, but I wouldn't make the assumption that you are out of the woods relative to laminitis. Now he could have quicked him, and he is just a little short. But don't assume that it is not laminitis, because I made this mistake. You might want to put him on anti-inflammatories now. It wouldn't hurt most situations, but it could help if it is laminitis.

Hello Susan, I shy away from vaccinating when something wrong is going on. Reactions to vaccines can look like lots of things including founder. DrO

We did not vaccinate, and he has an appt. next Tuesday for teeth and I will have an x-ray done. I know this is a hard question to answer, but since his lameness is improving, not getting worse, and when he walks barefoot on soft grass, he is walking normal, it is just on harder surface that he is off, would you feel comfortable saying it was just due to the trim? I am not going to give him any bute today, and keep his boots on for the next day or 2 and see how he is without the bute, good plan????

Hello Susan, I will say horses trimmed too closely behave much as you describe your horse but I cannot make that diagnosis about your horse. Your plan seems reasonable to me. DrO
