I have a small herd of Shetland Ponies (300-400 lbs each) that I need to vaccinate. I bought a vial of EWT+WNV (combo) specifically to vaccinate these ponies, but a friend who raises minis says that it is not a good idea to use combo shots on small equines. I have never heard this before, so would appreciate some advice. Thank you!

Hello CCT, I know of no reason why giving the combination vaccine would have more risk or be less protective than giving 3 separate (tetanus, E/W encephalitis, WNV) injections. Indeed it may be less irritating as you are not giving as much adjuvant which can be responsible for local and systemic reactions. DrO

Hi Dr. O, Thanks for the answer. The reasoning I was given for not giving combo shots to ponies is that it "overloads their system" or is "too much for their immune system." Seemed unlikely to me, but since I am new to ponies I thought I should check! CC

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think CCT meant giving the three separate injections on three different occasions, probably a few weeks apart. Surely that would be easier on a horse.

Hello LL, In horses with local reactions (swelling stiffness) I will often separate the injections that are not combined and pretreat as recommended in our article on vaccine reactions. However I do not break down the combination vaccines into its individual components and give together or separately as this just would increase exposure to the irritating adjuvant. DrO
