Dr. O,

My 33 year old Arab gelding has Cushing's and has been started on 1mg pergolide. He gets 3 lbs Alfalfa cubes twice daily (in addition to low starch pelleted feed) and I am considering adding Rice Bran to balance Ca:P in alfalfa. I have found a Grainland Select Rice Bran by Country Acres (Purina). It doesn't say "stabilized" but I called and was told that it is. It is only $12.99 per 50 pound bag. Is this cost about right for "stabilized" product?

The analysis on the tag is as follows:
Sodium .02-.07%
Phosphorous MIN 1.0%
Calcium .4-.9%
Ash MAX 10%

It appears based on the Ca:P ratio, it will serve the purpose of balancing the alfalfa, however, I am wondering about the ash. Is this bone ash? If so, my understanding from your article is that it is higher in calcium than phosphorus? I don't want to change what I am feeding if the ingredients defeat the purpose of balancing Ca:P.

Thanks,
Kelly

I would like to add that the tag also reads that ingredients are "Processed Grain By-Products" with a note that it is "Ruminant Meat and Bone Meal Free."

Hello Kelly,
Well it seems to have answered your own question of whether there is bone meal in the product. However the wide range of calcium and uncertainty with the phosphorous expressed in the guaranteed analysis do make calculations a little iffy.
