Hi all. I just found this site and joined hoping that some of you will be able to help out my 10 Day old nurse mare foal I adopted. Iv raised lots of foals over the last couple years but they have always had their mothers. I have 4 nurse mare foals on my farm right now and as of today the youngest isn't drinking his milk. The fourth foal was added to the group just yesterday and when he stopped drinking I was worried it was due to stress from having another foal to live with. So I have him and the filly he's been living with in a separate stall in case he wasn't getting along with the new filly. He wasn't interested at all in drinking from the bucket, which has not been an issue until today, but I was able to get a little into him with a syringe. Being late on a Sunday by time it became clear he wasn't doing well I couldn't go and buy a bottle to feed him with. What advice/ opinions do you guys have on a course of action to get him going again? I tried to lower any possible stress and am willing to get him a bottle. All advice and ideas will be greatly appreciated by me and this little guy!!

How has he been doing up to now? Does he exhibit any signs of illness? Fever? Rapid breathing? Rapid respirations? Rattle in lungs when he breathes? If you stick a finger in the milk the his mouth, will he suckle? I only raised a couple of orphans and always bottle fed until they were a month or so at least, but I realize your situation is different. Do you have Foal-Lac pellets? Mid you make a mash out of them, will he nibble on them?

Welcome carlie, Sara's advice was right on: you have to discover the cause and correct it. If you cannot find the cause you need to enlist professional help. How did the foal do? DrO
