Hi there.. Ok so in my herd of horses I have varying degrees of vaccinations to do. I'm clear on three but the fourth I am confused. Thoroughbred gelding, annual vaccine due in July. Fluvac Innovator 6 way with tetanus was given by his previous owner last July, then she gave a second vaccine booster two weeks later. I read the articles on vaccinations and I understand that in an adult horse annual one time vaccination is all that's needed? I do not know why she doubles up every year. A lot of horse owners seem to do this around here. Are they overdoing it? I can agree with biannual tetanus (and influenza maybe) but my horses don't go anywhere with anyone but each other, don't show, so I don't see the reasoning behind annual +two week booster every year for an adult horse with a known vaccination history. Thanks much!

Hello DD, If that was the first vaccine ever given it should be boostered in about 3 to 4 weeks after. Otherwise this makes no sense and neither does a biannual tetanus, once a year is fine. The recommended times for vaccination and the reason are given in the article and I know of no reason to deviate from those recommendations. DrO
