would like some input on proper cleaning of troughs and how to protect horses from west nile; was told to put larve eating fish in the water troughs, however, wouldn't that affect the quality of the water or even how often troughs are cleaned?

Hi, Linda. I have had great results in keeping mosquitoes away by using Mosquito Dunks which I get from my local farm store. They are available online, as well, as are other similar products that kill the mosquito larva. I use 1/2 a dunk (easy to break) in a 100 gallon water trough. The amount you use is in proportion to the number of square inches of water surface. The bacteria in the dunks is harmless to horses, but kills the nymphs when they come to the surface for air. I have to replace or add a piece of dunk every 2 weeks or so . . . Some horses will pick them out of the water, but most of mine leave the dunk alone.https://www.amazon.com/Summit-111-5-20-Pack-Mosquito-Dunk/dp/B0002568YA/ref=sr_1_ 1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429926380&sr=8-1&keywords=mosquito+dunks

Hello Linda, I know several folks who use fish in there water tubs and by regular cleaning the horses seem to do fine. Yes it means extra cleaning with the problem of caring for the fish while this is done. DrO
