My gelding got his hoof caught in his bridle a week ago. He had been buted prior to the ride for pro active reasons; 23, slowly be reintroduced to work and first long trail ride. He was caught for 5 - 10 seconds, did not freak out, but had a couple jerks of his head when he realized he was stuck. Buted him again that night. Next night he came in, not wanting to raise his head high, ate his grain but not his hay. By night check, he was fine, himself again. Swelling did not go down over the next 4 days, but he was fine otherwise. Vet was out and did a chiropractic adjustment and said he was out of alignment. Suggested DMSO which was applied twice. 2 days later swelling was gone. Went for another ride, he was very forward and had a couple of refusals to move forward, so there was more contact with the sidepull he was being ridden in than usual. Fine the next day, but following day (today) the swelling is back. He is otherwise fine. But I'm wondering if he pulled something, how long would it take to heal? Should I give him time off so there is no potential for aggravating where he is forward and requires a lot of contact etc. when being ridden? Of course, this all happens on the holiday weekend, no vets around, and I leave for a week long trip in two days. I'm thinking the time off will be good for him?

Judy, if it's a muscle/tendon injury, it certainly seems to me that time off would be best for healing. Will the person caring for your gelding be able to give him Bute while you're gone, if necessary?

Welcome Judy,
Not knowing the extent of the damage done it is impossible to tell how long it will take to heal. The fact that he was at least ridable in a few days suggest that this will heal but that he became swollen again suggest this was a little early. Yes time off for longer will be good for him.
