I have an 18yr old QH gelding that had a superficial laceration to coronary band 2 weeks ago and was severely lame. My vet said it was only superficial and advised we keep it bandaged for one week with daily changes and it should be fine. Was given long acting antibiotic injection also. X-rays showed no reason for lameness. Anyone with similar experience with coronary wounds?}

Hello Cowboysmom, My first thought is that your horse has developed an abscess from the laceration and that is what is causing the lameness. How did he get the laceration? Xrays won't show an abscess and antibiotics usually do not work on abscesses either. It also might be something other than an abscess or anything even related to the laceration. May be something higher up than the coronary band laceration which is the obvious problem but may not be the primary problem as far as the lameness issue goes.

My thoughts also. I did have my blacksmith check him also. No positive response to hoof testers. No inflammation around wound either. I just didn't want to run back to the vet if I didn't give it enough time.

I also do not know how he got laceration. I found it within 3 hours of it occurring. He was in my pasture. Maybe a rock? I cleaned it and bandaged it and gave bute. He was extremely lame at the time.

Welcome, cowboysmom. I wonder if there is something inside the wound? Maybe an xray would help determine. Also, my first thought was that in the healing of the wound, maybe there is a tightness that the horse feels whenever he puts pressure on his foot, and after a time, that will disappear. Also, maybe there is a bruise further up his leg or he wrenched a joint, as rtrotter says, maybe something further up his leg.

One of our geldings was messing with the girls and got his foot stuck in the a gate. Got a pretty nasty cut above the coronary band. But, pulled something in the hoof capsule. It took about 3 months to get over it. We had to put him on stall rest for awhile.

Was pretty lame this am. Hosed leg and stalled him. Soaked foot in Epson salts this evening. Guess there will be another vet trip this week. Thanks for all the input. No pain on or around healed wound tonight. It's gotta be something else I think.

Welcome cowboysmom, The most common reason I find for unusual and persistent lameness from a coronet injury is from a piece of wood broken off distal to the wound that cannot be found unless the horse is sedated and the area blocked and the wound explored. You will find more details on this and other aspects of coronet band injuries (for instance is this a gravel as opposed to an injury?) at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Coronary Band Injury. Injury site is healed and not sore on palpation. How was the joint capsule trauma diagnosed? Dr. O, wouldn't area be sore if object was in wound?

Understand. Cody was severely lame when wound was found. Got a little better as wound healed but lameness never resolved. Appointment for recheck in 2 days. Hopefully will get an answer. Thank you.

Cowboysmom, I hope the vet will be able to diagnose the lameness correctly and without much trouble, and that your horse's healing will be complete.

Took Cody to be reassessed. More xrays showed bone spurs on anterior aspect of coffin joint and nerve block indicated problem below fetlock. We tried joint injection of hyaluronic acid and depo and amikacin and unfortunately this didn't help. Next is MRI. We know he has arthritis so any major surgeries just doesn't make sense at his age. Hopeful but don't have a good feeling about this.

Thankful you are getting some answers and that you'll have a better idea of how to help Cody be comfortable.
