Sorry if this is a double post somewhere, I spent forever writing it but it is nowhere to be found. Here goes again. The white poof that comes off hay, otherwise looking ok is spores or mold? I am not talking about moldy spots, I have had a few bales like that, this is when you smack it, maybe twice it will poof a little/medium then stop. The smell is slightly musty like mushrooms but not sour and there is no VISIBLE mold. Just the smell and poof of white. I have been just tossing out the ends of the bales that poof a few flakes in, and if nothing else poofs and it smells ok, feeding that. But I would hate to be tossing a bunch of useable hay. I usually feed on the ground, my stalls are open on two sides to fresh air. If it is spores, can it be swept/blown off, soaked or steamed and still fed, or are there still dangerous mycotoxins in it?

Hello DD, You can always locate your recent posts by pushing the RECENT DISCUSSION button on the left. They post instantly to that search engine. Your other post is listed there. As to the questions you pose above they are all answered in detail in the article associated with this discussion area but to sum up: Any evidence of mold or mold spores in the bails means the hay is unsuitable for horses, not because of the toxins but because of the respiratory problems. As to whether your hay may have mycotoxins in it I cannot answer. If you are concerned about this have it examined by your veterinarian or someone who's judgement you trust. DrO
