Can I please find out if this is ok for me to feed my boys. I got a bale to look at and it looks great. It is very leafy, green, not stalky. Smells almost like tea bags. I gave a hand full to both my boys and they loved it. Is this hay safe to feed them during the winter time when the fields are not producing much grass for them. They are grained morning and evening and have full roam of the upper pasture 24/7. Ben is given Equine Saver, MSM and Master Jack morning and evening. Dusty is given 1 Majestic cookie morning and evening. Also they get an 1/2 apple and 1 1/2 carrots morning and evening. That start when Ben was sick, but we have kept it going as a treat now. Can anyone let me know. It looks great, but I am afraid to feed them something that can possibly harm them. Thanks much for anyone insight into this and your great responses on so many issues I have had in the past.

Hello Stacie,
Pearl millet has been used as both a pasture grass and for haying horses and considered safe by ag. agronomist. The only problem reported has been the possibility of nitrate poisoning usually associated with excess fertilization but I cannot find any cases.

Thank you Dr. O, I think I will try it for a season and keep an eye out on them. What are the symptoms to Nitrate Poisoning?

Though we don't have a whole article up, run a search on nitrate poisoning as we have discussed this before.
