I bought a horse last year - 10 year old Anglo-Arab gelding for dressage, show jumping, hacking and social trail riding. In my instructions to the vet who carried out the pre-purchase exam, I said that I wanted an endoscopy examination carried out "if indicated eg: breathing irregularities". I wasn't present at the examination. The vet's written report said that "At the start of his workout he gave two small coughs but showed no other respiratory abnormality". On the phone, the vet said to me that he didn't think there was anything to worry about. I accepted his professional opinion. Do you think that given my pre- exam instructions, and the coughs the horse gave, that the vet should have carried out an endoscopy?

IMO, no. It's really not that unusual for a horse to cough a couple of times when first starting to work, esp. if kept in a stall or somewhere it is dry or dusty. Just my opinion.

I agree with your vet and Sarah: two coughs on beginning work are not an indication of a serious problem, by itself and the type problems that might have been indicated would not show up on endoscopy of the upper air way. DrO
