Posted on Sunday, Aug 14, 2005 - 12:21 am: I have been keeping the horses (2 that don't get along) in the aluminum 12 ft panels. 6 panels. each getting a larger stall area when they are set up in a round pen fashion. So,I have 12 panels total. I was curious if anyone has ever used them as a zigzag fence configuration. And if you can think of any reason why i shouldn't. I figure putting them in a straight line wouldn't work based on stability of the panels. But if i put them in a z format could this work? I need temporary paddocks, till my barn and stallion aisle go up. If i move the pen into an open zigzag and tie the ends to existing fencelines i can allow both horses to roam freely on 1/2 an acre each, as opposed to now, while one is out the other has to stay in the 24 ft space... any thoughts on this? |

I actually like the zig zag better because it allows the horses some variety in their stalls. They have more room to roll in the wider areas, so that is where I put the most shavings, and I do believe the zig zag makes for a more sturdy divider. |

My thought is that the end of the line will be chainlinked (or some other tie thing) to a ground pole on an existing fenceline. I have come up with this idea yesterday, while my one mare was getting pissed, while the other was out. There has to be a better way. while they are respecting the panels. They do lean on them pushing the limit at times. I have seen how in a circle they will hold firm when she does this. In a zigzag if she did this i am afraid she can move the panels, like an accordian. The bottom of the panels do have an opening for something like a railroad spike. I think that might help. |

A previous ranch owner at this ranch had used segments of large circumference pvc pipe and set it in the ground and filled it with cement . . . then put rebar in the middle and put the legs of the panels on the rebar to make it sturdy. Presently, I don't have the panels on rebar, but do have them clamped to another "wall" of panels that make up the back end of the two paddocks. The gate panels on the paddocks are really heavy and have two gates, one on either end, and I have zig zagged the center "wall" between the paddocks from the center post of the gate panel to the panels that make up the back wall. I bet you can, with smooth wire, anchor the ends of the panels to wooden posts at the points where the panels come together. |

They are zigzag around trees and butted up against fences.as i have been watching her she seems to respect it, not doing anything stupid like really laying into them. I'm trying to think of something i can put on them to keep her off totally but nothing comes to mind. can't really put hot wire on aluminum... |
