Posted on Sunday, Sep 4, 2005 - 12:00 pm: Hi, Dr O:This is sort of 2 issues - but my main question is about the subject: My horse was the one that about a month ago ingested hoary alyssum and had swelled legs for a few days. He recovered fine. Last weekend, he was giving me a hard time when I wanted to pick his right rear hoof. I figured he was just giving me an attitude. He eventually gave me the foot but didn't like it. I wouldn't say I felt heat in his hoof or leg - but he was warm which I attributed to him standing in direct hot sun (he was out in the pasture when I brought him in.) I ended up scratching the back of his hoof for a little while that day and someone noted I must be hitting a sweet spot as his lip was quivering and looked a little sleepy. I did not see any scabs or anything on the back of his hoof - just normal white hair. I rode him for an hour that day. He was a little grumpy by the end of the ride, but it was the first time I had ridden him in about 2 weeks. 2 days later, he was lame on the right rear - didn't want to put weight on it. The vet said he had scratches on that hoof. The area where we live is going through a DrOught - very dry. Only a few rain showers this summer but the dirt dries out within a day. It was also thought there could be an abscess. Ichthammol was put on the heel and wrapped for several days. Bute and tucumprin(?). He has low heels already and was recently trimmed by a new farrier about 3 weeks ago. There has been no sign of an abscess and he is now putting weight on the foot. He's not yet 100% - he puts the right rear down toe first, then the heel - but it's almost unnoticeable- I think he's getting better with this, too. I was scratching his heel last night for a little bit - there are scabs but no open wounds at all. It just looks white with dried skin. He looked like he really like I am continuing the antibiotic for now. I am supposed worm with Strongid Sept 1. Should I wait a bit before I worm? I am not sure if antibiotics and wormers will work ok together. I don't want to give him too much to handle at once. Thanks! |

Posted on Monday, Sep 5, 2005 - 8:49 am: Update: I went to see him yesterday and he seemed to be walking on the foot fine. I let him out to run in the pasture for a few hours and he was cantering around several times. When I brought him up, I looked at the bottom of his foot and there appears to be a small hole in one of the bulbs of his heel. There is nothing draining out of it but it seems hollow in there (I can push on it a little and seems to be only air.) There is also a crack on the front of the hoof at the coronet band. Again no discharge. I did not see either of these when I looked at him earlier. He is still getting the tucoprim. Is this ok for him to be out? Is there something I should do now for his hoof? Thanks! |

Posted on Thursday, Oct 6, 2005 - 12:56 pm: Although my harley is not on meds now ,that is with the exception of Aspirin for ERU, my question is this. Is it recommended that you do not use any dewormers on horses that have Uveitis or are some safe to use? I know I have been told this along the line and I have also been told that some wormers aid in Uveitis. Can you help me out on this as it deworming time but I definitely do not want to if will cause another flare up.Thanks, Sandy |
