Last week a veterinarian made the statement while visiting a local tack shop that research results had just been released showing that horses being given the daily Strongid C and a supplement containing MSM could suffer liver damage. Dr. O, is there any truth to this?

Hello Judy, I think this is the second time I have seen this and as far as I can tell there is no support for the idea. At least I cannot find any research papers or clinical cases where this is conjectured. I must say however neither are there any well established benefits to feeding MSM. DrO

Thank you Dr. O for your response and I'm sorry I have taken so long to get back. I spoke with my vet again about the research. She said that it was a small research project done by the makers of the Strongid product. The conclusion of the research was that the daily Strongid enabled the liver to "soak up" more MSM and then some or all(?)of the liver enzymes became elevated which could lead to damage of the liver. (I think the word the vet used was "potentiates"). Once the combination was discontinued the enzyme levels returned to normal. And then again, maybe it was the MSM that was the potentiator. Boy, doesn't it sound as if I know what I'm talking about!
