I am in the process of looking for a new event horse and many of the prospects that look promising are in other states or areas where I don't know the vets. How do I select a vet to do the pre purchase exam in this situation?

That is a tough question. I would avoid using the prospective horses regular veterinarian. However I would ask to have that horses FULL medical records released to you. This is a much under utilized tool in accessing a horses fitness and I am always surprised at the resistance put up. It always makes me suspicious when it occurs or I get 5 years of nothing but vaccinations. Before spending a lot of money, if possible, have the horse videotaped on lunge at the trot in both directions. Then trotted towards the camera and away from the camera. Have your vet review the tape for signs of lameness. The Am Assoc. of Eq Prac. puts out a directory every year of Equine Practitioners by locale. Your veterinarian will probably have this list and you could start there for a vet. Also, I believe the AAEP site has a vet finder on its site, AAEP.org. Get several names call them and get a feel for their experience and general attitude to see if it matches your expectations. Do all you can to be there for the exam. DrO
