Discussion on Bits of grassroots found in timothy hay, dangerous?

Dear all,
I recently purchased 150 bales of timothy hay to stock up for winter. For about a week now, my horses have been happily munching along on it.
However the other day I was spending some time in the barn and it was very quiet, so I was listening to their scrunching noises. Much to my surprise I'd sometimes hear a scrunching as if they were grinding stones. I immediately checked the hay and found that there are some bits of grassroots in there. Looks to me like the machine ripped some out rather then cut them. The roots appear cut midthrough. They are very hard, but no sand or earth covering them. Again my horses don't appear to have a problem eating those roots, but it makes a horrible noise when chewing it.
Can I continue feeding this hay? Is there any danger in them eating dried grass roots? Will it cause damage to their teeth?

I do of course now extensively browse through their hay before feeding it and take most out by hand, however I can't help but missing some.

I suppose if need be, I'll have to discard of all those bales:-(?!

Many thanks for your ideas.

Regards.
Patsy.

Hello Patsy,
The hay is fine and I don't believe there is any problem with timothy roots.
