I have two mares who have started rubbing their tails excessively against fencing, the stall, gates, etc.. Their tails look horrible and I can't figure out what it could be. They are on a regular (6 to 8 weeks) worming schedule and it can't be heat because this started in the cold weather. One of the mares is due in January and I have heard that sometimes the foal moving makes them rub their tail. I have also heard that I need to clean between the teats on both of them. If I need to call a vet out, I will. I just thought if someone had some suggestions, I am at a loss as to why they have started this. I have six more horses who are not doing this at all. Any thoughts, Dr. O?

Hello Julie,
We cover common conditions that cause itchiness at Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Scratching & Rubbing. It will give you some specific ideas as to cause and also some nonspecific treatment.

Julie,
definitely start cleaning between their teets and under their tails and between the back legs as well. Even if you find that something else is causing the excessive rubbing, it is good hygiene to clean your mares periodically.
