The power in our barn was out from Sunday through yesterday and we use well water, which means we had no water. The barn manger got water from a neighbor. She is thinking of getting a generator to run the pump when the power goes out.
Does anyone have any ideas where she could get as inexpensive a one as possible? We are in PG county Maryland. I am waiting to get specs for wattage, amperage, voltage, etc from her, but wanted to put this out now.
Thanks!!!

She needs to be careful with the wattage Alicia. Water pumps are usually 220v, high wattage items. Most generators produce 220v but the less expensive ones may not have the wattage needed to get the pump started, even if rated for a little above what the pump needs. To prevent strain on the pump at startup, I would double the running wattage of the pump for the generator. Or better is to get the advice of a good electrician on this issue.

Yeah, it is a 220v. The barn was built by the man who lives in a separate house on the property and he knows what the specs will have to be. He told her she could get one that would run the barn for around 600 dollars, which seems pretty optimistic to me. The barn has lights in the aisle, a hot water heater, indoor halogen lights, and her apartment upstairs. I bet the kind he is talking about would only run the water pump, though we wouldn't need the other stuff if it were an emergency.
