Hello, I have been adding "stabilized" rice bran to my colt's feed in the amount of 4 oz. a day to his regular grain which is 3 1/4 lbs. twice a day. I am told feeding rice bran has a calming effect, but I have yet to see any difference in his behavior. I also have read articles that insinuate there is a difference between regular rice bran and "stabilized" rice bran, that the stabilized bran is basically empty calories. So, my question is...what's the difference between "stabilized" and regular rice bran, which is more effective and do they really provide any calming effects for colts? He was on a different brand of rice bran when I bought him and was extremely calm and quiet, he's not so anymore, a little more to handle. This is the same one with the rearing problem, by the way. Thanks!

I am not sure what the difference is, why don't you put the labeled nutrients of both types on here and we will see. DrO

DrO- Ok, I have since found out that I was mis-informed. Both brands of rice bran are "stabilized" and I guess the process is used to increase shelf life. I still am not sure about the calming effects of this stuff on horses. The rice bran he eats now is Equi-Jewel and the stuff he was on before is Natural Glo from the Moorman Co. I'm not sure who makes Equi-Jewel, it's endorsed by the Kentucky Equine Research center, though. I'll keep looking for more information. Thank you!

Did anyone ever find out about the calming effect? FYI...the makers of Natural Glo are recommending that it be used with their other product to balance the ca:phos ratio . I just began a product by Feedmark that is supposed to be balanced w/no other product needed. Barb
