Back in october i had my gelding's sheath cleaned by the vet, as i wanted him to show me what to do. he actually said my gelding is pretty clean and could probably go without frequent cleaning.

Fastforward- last week i was messing with my gelding, and trying to see if there were any 'sensitive' areas that eh would/ would not allow me near.

He allowed me near his privates, and i happened to get a piece of smegma on my hand, it looked black in color. further inspection told me it was a purple/ maroon color, the color of blueberry in blueberry pie.

what is that?! he doesn't pass blood when he urinates, not that i can see anyway. it doesnt seem to be bothering him, either.

he actually seemed to enjoy my 'inspection'

any ideas? does this require a vet asap?

Thanks,

Ally

Welcome Allyson,
I have seen smegma that was purple in color so unless you see evidence of blood, this is no big deal.

Phew! that's a relief :-) ....and so was washing my hands!!

I do wonder why it turns that color though...quite odd, isn't it?

Thanks,

Ally,

I keep a box of latex gloves in the barn so when I get the opportunity to "pick" a little while grooming, I don't have anything to clean up.

By the way, my gelding also enjoys these "inspections". He will bring his head clear back to sniff my hands, YUK!! He's a little weird!
