Greetings - Any guidance for feeding honey to horses? Does it have a nutritional value? I'd like to feed about a tablespoon a day as an enticement/treat. Any issues I should know about? Thank you

For healthy horses a tbl a day will cause no harm. It is primarily sugar and their is a lot of talk about the ill effects of too much rapidly digestible carbohydrate in the horses diet. I think an alfalfa cube or carrot (which also is high in rapidly digestible sugar) makes a better treat as they are just not as messy.

Thank you DrO. By-the-by, my horse I wrote about several months ago, with mysterious lameness behind (considered stifle or hip problems), on Nuclear Scintigraphy showed Kissing Spines SynDrOme, with another hot spot in the sacral area on the right (etc.!). He became very lame and sore all over. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know what was discovered using this great piece of technology! Yours truly, Nancy

It always helps to know. Was it treated and if so how and what was the outcome?

Due to his OTHER chronic lameness issues (therapeutic shoeing every 4 weeks for crushed front left foot (truck accident) and Cushings Disease, AND both vets consulted believed he would never be comfortable under saddle again, I elected to put him down. This horse had the heart of a Marine - tremendous work ethic, but did not like other people or horses. He had little option as a retirement horse and my husband is not a horse person - we live in a townhouse...I'll see him in the Great Beyond. Thank you again for your counsel last Fall - your website is a service to many and a great place to brainstorm and share experience!

I am so sorry to hear that but admire your perspective on it. Thank you for the kudos.

Dear Nancy,
Sincere condolences on the loss of your horse. It is such a hard decision, but often the only right one for the sake of a beloved horse.
