I was just reading the thread about the fence alert and thought I would bring up another issue. We have leased a barn and there are three pastures with all wood fencing. Now that the horses are shedding their winter coats, they are rubbing the fence. We just brought our gelding home from the vet on Saturday after surgery to remove a 5 inch splinter, which looks more like a stick! It was completely under the skin and through three layers. It was actually in his muscle as well. He has 12 staples and a drain that runs from one end of the wound to the other that we have to drain twice daily for five days. The fence is not that many years old, but the top boards have marks from the horses chewing and rubbing, etc., which makes an easy target for this to happen!!!

A good prevention for this is to run an electrical wire around the top board, it sure saves on fence, and apparently horse, maintenance. DrO
