Dr. O,

What are the pro's and con's of vaccinating horses for leptospirosis. (This has come up because we have a mare here that aborted in the ninth month. LSU has determined leptospirosis the cause. By the way we have no standing water.)

There are no known pros and cons as the Lepto vaccines efficacy and side effects are not studied in horses. The vaccine has been used without serious side effects in a small number of cases, serious reactions have not been reported, and it is possible it might decrease the lepto induced abortion incidence. But stronger support is hard to muster with the general lack of information surrounding this process.

There is some thought that Lepto causes "moon blindness" (Uveitis), and if the vaccine would help prevent that it would be important -- especially in species more inclined to get that problem. The administering of it to dogs is very controversial in our area and my Vet. recommends against it for canines. How do you feel about it for dogs, Dr. O?

We discuss the connections of Lepto and Recurrent Uveitis in the article and it is important that vaccination not be considered for those who already have RU. This is an occasionally discussed subject that could be found through search.

Leptospirosis is a serious life threatening disease of dogs but the lepto vaccine has a high incidence of reactions particularly in small breeds. The vaccine is effective however. How you balance this should be made on an individual basis with the help of your vet.
