Discussion on How to vaccinate your horse yourself | |

Posted on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 - 11:37 am: Hi, I just became a member, and I am not new to horses, but with all the vaccines out on the market designed for the owner to vaccinate their own horse, how do you know how much to give and does age of the horse affect the amount of vaccine to give to the horse. I just bought a horse that was severly neglected and we are nursing him back to proper weight, he was wormed 3 weeks ago and I plan to follow up in another 3 weeks with another worming, but I don't imagine due to his condition that he has had any of his shots, and I plan to have a vet come and do a physical, but think it would be cheaper to do the vaccines myself. Another question is I have been doing some reading and the article I was reading suggested not giving all the shots at the same time. What shots would you start with and at what intervals would you give them? I used to have a wonderful vet that gave me the shots and I administered them to my QH, but he allways prefilled them so it was a no brainer, but the last few times I called him out before my QH passed away he was really rude and not the same anymore. I think he was getting tired of the business and wanted out. Now I have to find a new vet that can take over the care of my new horse. I have used one in particular, but they only deal with small pets. Any suggestions Dr.O? Thanks.Sherrie |

Concerning specific doses, you need to read the label instructions as doses change form product to product and even the same product might change from year to year. DrO |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 30, 2000 - 12:07 am: I have vaccinated my friend's and my horses for many years and have had no problems. I even keep epinephrine on hand in case of an allergic reaction. My friend and I know have three boarders in our barn and they have all asked that I vaccinate theirs as well. I have been a professional horsewoman for 15 years and have a solid foundation in veterinary care and am studying to be a veterinary assistant. With that said, am I asking for trouble by vaccinating other people's horses. I only administer PHF, EWE, TET, & FLU/Rhino, I have the vet give the rabies vaccine. Should I ask them to sign a liability release? |
