Discussion on Strongid Safe for Pregnant Mares?
Author Message

Hello,

I have a mare that is due to foal this October. It has been two years since she has been treated for tape worms with a double dose of Strongid.

When would the best time be for the Strongid dose? Would it be more effective (or safe) to give it to her while she is pregnant, nursing or the when the foal is weaned?

Thank you.
Julie

Hi, Julie. I'll let Dr. O address a single dose wormer with you. I've had my pregnant mare on Strongid CX through her entire pregnancy on the advice of my veterinarian. It is not absorbed, so the baby doesn't know Mom is on it. We also periodically (about every 6 months) worm her with Ivermectin. She looks great, and has incredible dapples. She's also big as a house and due any day.

Hello Julie,
Unless you have specific health related issues with tapeworms I would wait until the foal is born. It would probably be safe, but best to be sure.
