My 6 year old mare is due for her annuals (usually Fluvac Innovator 5), but two months ago she had to get a tetanus booster after getting cut up in some wire. Can I safely give the tetanus portion again or do I need to subtract that from the annual and find a different product.

Welcome, John,
I'd be very interested on that too, DrO.
Is there an increased risk for liver disease if the shot administered for the cut was the antitoxin and two months later the vaccine booster comes?

John there is a tiny increase of possible complications, soreness or allergic reaction, giving the 2 so close together. If it is convenient I would skip it if not it probably will not be a big deal. Though I don't know any studies I don't think giving the toxoid vaccine increases the chance of induced chronic hepatopathy. The disease mechanism involves the sensitization of the immune system to the horses "self" antigens which would not be stimulated by the toxoid other than in the most nonspecific of ways.

Thanks much... I think the term convenient is probably more appropriate for my horse since I don't think I'll be able to find a combo without tetanus and thus end up giving multiple shots. Thus, I think I'll keep with the status quo. Thanks again.
