Hi There, I have a quick question. My friend is trying to put about 150 lbs onto her horse. Her barn has started feeding him Beet Pulp. I know this is one of the more common fatteners but from what I can see it does not seem like the best all round nutritionally. Does anyone else have fattener suggestions that can be added into bran meal? Thanks!

Hi Jaylaan, I see this is your first post, so welcome to the Horseman's Advisor. I have a couple questions for you. How old is the horse? How did he get to be 150 lbs underweight (medical condition, is a rescue, etc.)? I personally find the combination of beet pulp and corn oil to be a great source when needing to put weight on a horse. Here is a good article on beet pulp, too, called The Myths and Reality of Beet Pulp. https://www.shady-acres.com/susan/beetpulp.shtml Also, there are commercial weight builder products like Weight Builder by Farnam, has your friend tried something like that? Hope this helps, Nicole in New Mexico

Though beet pulp does have some nutritional problems jaylann these are corrected in large part by combining with bran as you indicate will be done in your post for more on this see, Care for Horses » Nutrition » Forages for Horses, an Overview. There is a section on feeding bet pulp in the article. DrO

Thank you both so much for the information! I have passed it all along to my friend. I don't think that they were adding oil as well so that might just do the trick. Thanks again! Jaylaan
