Hello all. My horse has started to show small cracks in the horn of her hoof, and my barn manager recommended that I use a product containing turpentine and pine tar to strengthen the hoof as well as hold in moisture. She couldn't tell me why those two ingredients would help, though, and I am curious. Does anyone know how they work? I can imagine pine tar adding cohesion, but I haven't a clue how turpentine helps. Just wondering. Thanks! Lisa

I am not sure either. It will toughen soles but I have not seen the recommendation to put it on walls before. DrO

Dr.O: I hope I'm in the right spot! I have an old (20 yrs.) AQHA that has extremely THIN soles. Will Turpentine and Pine Tar help toughen the soles, without making them brittle? That's what concerns me about using this type of product on his soles....if it will make them brittle, I would worry about cracking the sole. What's your take on this? How often would you recommend applying this? Thanks in advance! Pockets

As stated above Lynn, yes it will toughen the soles, though whether it make make them brittle will depend on your particular circumstances and how aggresively you use the product.
