I have a friend worrying to death because one of her mares seems to have been exposed to rhino at the breeding farm (and brought it home). Other than the respiratory symptoms, hind-end stiffness also seems to be present in one foal and in her own stallion. Does anyone know what the risks are for her other pregnant mares (most are very early in their terms)? I hadn't heard of the hind-end problem. Is this a true symptom? Also, how casual or aggressive need the contact be for infection to occur? If anyone out there would care enough to CALL me about this, I'd sure appreciate it--she is super worried, crying and all, about losing her entire crop (most would be by the freshman stallion she is desparate to prove). My number is 717-352-3463 and you can call collect (say your name is Rhino, maybe?). THANKS!!!

Well, Though I have seen no specific studies it is generally felt exposure prior to somewhere between the 3rd and 5th month does not result in pregnancy loss. Pretty casual contact of a susceptible individual can result in infection. Yes, viral infections can result in muscle stiffness. DrO
