Discussion on Influenza & Tetanus: Safe to give at the same time?

Dr. O,

I have decided to give my own flu and tetanus shots to my horses as it is much more cost effective than paying a $60.00 barn call every few months. Because my horses race and travel all over the state I give them a flu shot every three months. This becomes rather costly for a shot that I can order for under $10. I know I should ask my vet this question but I don't want to hurt his feelings by not having him give the shots.

Is it safe to give a Flu shot and Tetanus on the same day?

Yes but condsidering your circumstances you should be giving the new intranansal flu vaccine. See the article on the various vaccines, for details.

I've been wanting to try that vaccine but no one in my area seems to know much about it....I'm sort of veterinarian deprived...:). My vet is good but fresh out of school and not extremely familiar with horses. I will read the information regarding this product and see if it looks like something that I can do myself.

Thanks,

Joy
