Posted on Sunday, Jun 17, 2001 - 11:14 pm: This will be my mares second foal, but my first one. I have read your guidelines and still have some questions about vaccination and worming, nutrition and supplements. She has moved onto pasture and is doing well as she is a very hard keeper. (ex thoroughbred racehorse). Her weight had been a problem before she was on pasture so I tried a probiotic supplement, but I don't know if I should keep using it, I was also giving her milled flax. For worming I had followed the advice of well meaning friends by alternating wormers every 2 mo. I would like to try your worming routine of Quest 1yr, Ivermectin 2nd year and 2xstrongid yearly. Is that okay to switch straight away, she is due to be wormed 2mo. She is 30 days in foal. I have been given different advice on vaccinating the broodmare and was wondering if you could clarify that. I was told to try a broodmare extruded feed in the last trimester, but I was also told that you would have to feed tons of that to get the necessary vitamins and minerals. So I was thinking of just keeping her on the 14%pellets and then adding a vit and min supplement in the last trimester. I will need to feed her extra as the pasture is poor over winter and she will DrOp weight as she is a hard keeper. She does well on beet pulp. Is that balanced enough with the pellets to give her the right ratios. This was a long question I hope you can answer some of my questions. Or do you have a recommended book that deals with them. Thank you for you time. |
