Probably due to the explosion of subdivisions in my area and loss of natural habitat, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of deer on my property. Does anybody know about intestinal parasites in deer and if their internal parasites can also affect horses? Do the dewormers currently on the market for horses protect the horses from deer parasites? As I drive down my drive and see all the deer in my pastures, I can't help but wonder about the effect of all their feces in the pasture.

Teresa, I don't have a scientific answer for you but I live in a rural area with a very large & growing deer population. I routinely see the deer in and around the pastures. None of the 2 horses I've owned have ever had any problems due to the deer and at the barn I'm currently at, there are 4 horses that are at least 25+ years old...no deer related problem. I just keep a careful eye out for ticks, but I've never found one. Some may be concerned about Lyme's disease, but if I remember correctly from DrO's response to other posts, it hasn't been proven that horses contract this - probably more of a risk to you than your horses.

Hi Teresa For many years I kept my horses at Richmond Park in London where they regularly shared grassing with deer and there was never any problems with people of horses. It was a big yard with about 200 horses so I should'nt think you need to worry. Liliana
