I have recently changed my 3 mares diet from Seminole Blue Ribbon 10% sweetfeed to Nutrena Safe Choice 14% pellets in an attempt to cut some of the "sugar" out of their diets. Now I know I am not supposed to discuss a ladies' age but they are 18, 10 and 6 years of age. The 6 year old has always been big on urinating and insists that it can only be done in the stall. Since changing from the 10% protein to the 14% protein, she has increased her output even more to the point we can not keep her stall dry. (and I mean it's turning into a mud hole in there.) The other 2 mares remain unaffected. I have heard that horses pass excess or unneeded protein in their urine. Is this true and if it is, should I find another feed with lower protein for her? Her attitude has improved since changing to the new feed which is another reason I changed. (she used to be very grumpy most of the time.) Along with the pellets they get coastal hay in the morning and Timothy at night. Both hays are very nice. So what do you think? Anyone else ever experienced the same thing? Thanks Charlayne

Hello Charlayne, It is uncertain why your horse is urinating more. Considering that timothy and coastal tend to be borderline-low in protein considering NRC recommended amounts, I suspect the 14% is better in line with your horses needs. Also it is untrue that increased protein feeds put a strain on the kidneys. DrO
