what about those larve eating fish for the water troughs; apparently the county has ordered that the water in trough be treated that way; isn't it just better to scrub out the troughs at least once a week what is best???

I clean my troughs about every 2 weeks in the summer or whenever I think the water looks too dirty. Algae, dust, hay, bugs . . . all get in the water. I let the horses drink the troughs down as much as possible when the troughs are looking dirty, then I dump and scrub with a stiff brush. Often, I salvage the Mosquito Dunk and add it to the clean water.
I have seen fish used in troughs in CO, CA, and in KS. My experience with them was that they died in the summer in the heat. For me, the fish are just another living thing for me to "worry" about. The dunks aren't alive :-) and they work really well for the mosquitoes.

Three years ago, on the recommendation of a friend, I tried "barley bales" in my troughs. I didn't think they helped at all. Still had to clean the troughs just as often.https://www.enasco.com/product/C29618N
