I am considering a Dodge Ram 2500 Cargo Van with a V8 engine. I would be best for my business as a doggie day care and boarding. But I haven't heard anything about how well vans tow a horse trailer. I want to be able to tow a 2-horse trailer 2-4 times per month. Does anyone have any experience and/or advice?

Talk to your Dodge dealer to learn what the max trailer weight would be, and also learn what other options you need (heavy duty tow package? lower gear ratio?). Add up the weight of your trailer - including the 2 horses and whatever else you haul in the trailer - to see if you're under that limit. Once you find out you have a powerful enough vehicle, choose a weight-distributing hitch (sway bars). MW

Sway bars are a very good idea. I DrOve a friend's 1 ton conversion van pulling a 4 horse stock trailer with 4 horses in it before and after she got sway bars. Fishtailing is NO fun! ~Sharon

I've towed with cars, trucks, and van-type vehicles. You've certainly picked a capable tow vehicle. My experience ( which is probably just a personal shortcoming ) is that with SUV or van-type tow vehicles, my backing ability becomes sorely compromised - much to my chagrin. For some reason, I would lose all sense of smooth trailer placement, and chose to avoid any backing maneuvers other than the most basic.

Another good source of information on trailering horses is https://www.horsetrailers-online.com. The discussion group is especially helpful.
