Discussion on Feeding foal with possible allergies

I have a four month old foal not weaned yet. He has a cronic cough that has been treated with various antibiotics. He seems to cough most when nursing or eating. Cough seemed to be gone but has returned when he started eating grain with mom. I am feeding Omalene 300. Could the corn in the grain be causing an allergy? Would a diet of plain oats be better? What supplememnts would be needed?

I forgot to tell you that he is on a grass pasture and is fed grass hay when needed.

Hello Smcf,
It is very unlikely the corn, as long as it is not dusty, is causing the cough. To determine the likely cause and significance of the cough and the proper treatment requires a thorough exam. (I hope it is not your vet telling you this). We have an article on the causes and treatment of chronic coughs in horses and foals at, Equine Diseases: Respiratory System: Chronic Cough Without Fever.
