I hope this is in the right place. This is about a friends horse that can't have alfalfa and until just resently has been on very high doses of Vit. C. The mare produces calcium crystals in her urine and this causes bleeding. Her explination to me was this:"Rich hay contains calcium (especially alfalfa) apparently Crystal doesn't break this down well and it becomes calcium crystals in her urinary tract. If the crystals are large/numerous they can cause bleeding. Last time she bled so much her urine looked like cranberry juice and she became anemic. The massive doses of Vit C were an attempt to acidify her urine to break down the crystals. Dr. thinks this didn't work well because her urine was alkaline even with all the vit C." My question here is what can you give a horse to make thier urine more acidic? The vit. C did not do the job and it produced ulsers in her mouth.

There is something a little odd here. It is normal for horses to produce calcium crystals in their urine, sometimes so much as to turn the urine almost white. I guess it is possible to hypothesize a horse that is extra sensitive or has a primary problem that is aggravated by the crystal. Anyway for more on these topics and your questions see: 1)Equine Diseases: Urinary System: Normal Urination in Horses 2)Equine Diseases: Urinary System: Kidney Stones DrO
